Severe Weather Safety

how to make snare traps

Severe weather can pose a real threat to your home and property. It is vital to be alert to changing weather conditions and use technology to rapidly respond. A solid disaster plan is also necessary. To help you develop your plan, the Accident Fund has prepared Severe Weather Safety materials for individuals and organizations.

You can prepare for severe weather

It's crucial to prepare for severe weather in areas where you live. Many severe storms cause large amounts of damage and may cause death, so it's vital to take all precautionary steps to ensure that you and your family are safe and sound. A good plan will include nonperishable food, water, flashlights with extra batteries, prescription medications, nonelectric can openers, and baby care items.

Keep yourself informed about the latest weather forecasts if you live near severe weather. For the latest information about your area, you can listen to local radio stations or check the NOAA weather radio. To receive emergency instructions, you should sign up for emergency notifications. Some communities have outdoor sirens to alert residents of impending severe weather, while others rely on the media to communicate with people.

Sheltering in a building

It is essential to seek shelter in a building during severe weather. This will allow you indoors to avoid the dangers of the outdoors and ensure that your personal property is safe. You should seek shelter in an indoor room, and preferably without windows. In addition, locking windows and exterior doors will ensure your safety. Turn on the radio, and be prepared to stay longer inside the building.

survival in the outdoors

You can shelter in a vehicle if you're outside of a building. Avoid large open spaces, windows, and roofs. It is a good idea, however, to seek shelter in a nearby building. In the event of a storm, stay inside until the storm passes.

Keep warm in extremely cold conditions

Keep warm even in very cold weather. This includes avoiding the elements and wearing warm, waterproof clothing. You should also invest in leather gloves that are lined to protect your hands from the elements. Try to avoid going outside and walk under buildings.

The first rule of staying warm in cold weather is to dress in layers. The best way to keep warm in cold weather is to wear layers. Thinner layers of clothes will hold heat better than thicker ones. Layers can be added to keep your fingers and torso warm. Wearing a pair of thermal tights underneath your clothes is a smart idea as well. However, keep in mind that tight clothing will reduce blood flow and prevent warm blood from reaching cold body parts. Additionally, a hat can be a great way to keep your head, and face, warm.

Avoid the use of electrical equipment

Avoid using electricity if you live in an area susceptible to severe storms. It is better to stay higher than necessary if you are required to work with electrical apparatus. You can always call your emergency number for help if you aren't sure what to do. Also, you should have an emergency kit prepared and listen to the local weather reports. If you see a severe storm warning or watch, you'll know to stay away from the area.

A metal enclosed building is safer than any other. The conductivity of electricity can be passed through pipes and through metal. It is important to stay at least 10ft from any exposed electric lines. Convertible vehicles are not recommended as they do not offer lightning protection.

things u need to survive

Avoiding heat rash

Keep cool and wear loose-fitting clothes to avoid the heat rash symptoms. You should avoid exercising in the heat. Fans can be used to keep you cool if you are forced to go outdoors. Also, you should avoid wearing synthetic fabrics or staying in wet clothes. Cool compresses should be applied to the affected area to help keep your body cool. You should also avoid scratching the rash.

It can be very dangerous for children and infants, especially small ones. It is often caused by excessive sweating, and can be a problem even when babies and toddlers wear multiple layers of clothing. Extra-skinfolded children and infants are at greatest risk. Don't wear tight clothes as they will hinder sweat from evaporating.

The most important thing you need to survive is food. Shelter from the elements is also important, but they are less essential than food. You will not live very long if there isn't enough food.

What is your best survival tool in the event you lose everything?

The compass is a tool that tells us where north is. It also shows how far we have traveled to get from our starting point. The compass won't always show you the correct direction if you travel to mountains. However, if you're in a flat area, the compass should be able to show you the way.

For those who don't have a compasse, you can use a rock or tree as a guide. However, you can still use a landmark as a way to navigate but it will be easier to determine north.

How to Navigate with or Without a Compass

While a compass won't show you where you are, it will help you locate your way home if you lose track of your direction.

Three different ways you can navigate are available:

  1. By landmarks
  2. By magnetic North (using a compass)
  3. By stars

Landmarks are objects that you recognize when you see them. They include trees, buildings, rivers, etc. Landmarks can be useful because they are a visual indicator of where you're at.

Magnetic North simply refers to the direction that the Earth's magnet field points. The sun appears to be moving across sky if you look up. The earth's magnetic field actually causes sun to move around. Even though it seems like the sun is moving across a skyline, it actually moves around horizons. At noon, the sun is directly overhead. The sun is directly beneath you at midnight. The magnetic field of the earth is constantly changing. This means that the exact direction and orientation of the North pole magnetically changes each day. This means that sometimes you may be off course for quite a while.

Stars can also be used to navigate. Stars appear to rise and set over the horizon. These are fixed points in space that you can use to determine your location relative to other locations.

How do I pick the right knife?

Choosing the best knife for your needs isn't easy. There are so many brands out there that claim to be the best.

But which one is the best? How do they compare?

First, think about the type of tasks you will be using your knife for.

Do you want to chop wood, skin animals, slice bread or chop vegetables?

Is the knife meant for hunting or fishing? Is it designed for camp cooking or kitchen knife cutting?

Will you be using it to open cans or bottles? What about opening boxes and packages?

Are you able to carry heavy loads with your knife?

Is it worth cleaning it after every use. How often are you going to wash it?

Does it need to retain its edge well over time.

What should be your first instinct in a survival situation

Assess the situation immediately you are faced with an emergency. You need to know what is happening around you, where you are and how you got there.

You should also know what to expect from your surroundings. You may not be capable of using any communication methods if your environment is remote.

If you don't know anything at all, then you need to start by learning as much as you can as fast as possible.

It is best to seek immediate help if you are in danger. You might be able to wait until you are safe to collect information and find out the facts.
